Central Passage
Genesis 2:7
“How It All Got Started”, Msg. 4

The traditional view as to the authorship of the Pentateuch is that Moses, the great law giver, prophet, and judge, wrote the first five books of the Bible. If this is correct, they were written during the 40 years of wandering in the wilderness; the third period in the life of Moses.

Genesis records the beginnings. It sets forth several beginnings: the world, life, domestic relations, institutions, moral order, sin and consequences, God’s plan for man’s redemption, nations, and the beginning of the Messianic nation; in particular.

In some respects, Genesis is the most remarkable book of the Bible. It begins with the truth; that God is; that there is one God; and that He is the creator of the universe. Genesis teaches us that God made man and created him in His image. We are to be spiritual. Lastly, Genesis teaches us of the story of the human race and how it passes from a state of innocence into a state of sin.

Every now and then I hear someone referencing someone else as being older than dirt. I’ve never found humor in it. Let’s take a look at what “old as dirt” is: It’s a way to exaggerate someone’s age. It’s saying that one is as old as the planet; extremely old.

There’s nothing spectacular in what man is made of which is dust of the ground. Dirt; the most basic element. He is not made of rocks or metal, but from the light shifting parts of the surface blown about.

Dust means something of little worth. However, dust is not evil. It’s not ‘nothing’, but it’s next to nothing. Into the nostrils of man, God breathed breath and His spirit within him; and man became a living thing – a living soul. God especially created man by doing this. Man is the only being made in the image of God. The soul is the part of us which is life. When we die, our souls leave the body. To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord (2 Corinthians 5:8).

Don’t take it personally when you tell me that I’m older than dirt and I don’t show offense in my response. It is true I am older than dirt. Your dirt is old, too! It is also true that God didn’t make any junk. We are made from the same clay. In fact, we were created on the same day that God made the earth and the world.
