Genesis 3:20
"How It All Got Started", Msg. 25

Continuing the series of “How It All Got Started, this morning I want to preach about the one who was predestined to be “The Mother of All Mothers”. This is to say that something is bigger than all other things of the same kind. As a quick recap, in Genesis 3:17, it was Adam’s turn to be sentenced for his crime. God addressed Adam directly and chastised him for following His wife and not the Father. As punishment, man would no longer enjoy provisions of the Garden. Instead, for all his days, man would eat of the ground in sorrow. He would eat the thorns and thistles the ground brought forth, would sweat while he labored, and would return to the ground when his, now shortened life, was over.

Adam called his wife’s name Eve. There were three names used to reference her: she was called woman (Isha) because she was taken out of man (Genesis 2:23); she was called Eve, the name given to her after her violation of God’s command; and she was called Life, Life-giving, or Mother of All Who Have Life. Adam could have been mean spirited because of the sin the woman brought into the world, but instead he was compassionate and gave her the God-willed name of her prophetic life ahead. Through the seed of woman, one day, death would be swallowed up in victory.

There are two thoughts to the “Mother of All Living” origin: one is Moses, as the historian and writer of the book of Genesis, and the second is Adam, by way of prophecy of what Eve would be, walked close to God and communed with Him. Adam (which includes Eve) would not immediately die for their sins. They should live, have children and a savior would come to redeem mankind. Therefore, it was with pleasure that Adam gave Eve this name.

By way of firsts, Eve was the first woman to live upon the earth; the first not to be born as other women are born. Eve was never a baby or child; she was not even a daughter. Eve was born (created) as an adult from the side/rib of Adam. Eve was the first woman to be introduced to a man, be called a wife, be named by man, and the first to receive a love poem from her husband:

“This is now bone of my bones,
And flesh of my flesh;
She shall be called woman,
Because she was taken out of man.”

Eve is the most beautiful woman in mind, body and spirit, the world has ever known. She was the first and only woman born without sin; she was the first on earth to be tempted by Stan. In other words, she was the first member of the Temptations! She was the first dressmaker to create a cover-up for the body. She was the world’s first mother to have a son who was a murderer and the first woman not to reveal her age! Now, tell me this is not the Mother of All Mothers.

Though this is not Mother’s Day, remember your mom, living or departed:

Mother Defined

What defines a mother?
It’s more than DNA
In fact, it seems biology
Will just get in the way.

It’s not from whom we came from
It’s who made us who we are
It’s who gave us strength and courage
And the drive to travel far.

Some mothers are there from the beginning
Some join us along the way,
But always they’re supporting us
Each and every day.

Thanks often is unspoken
In truth there is no need
Our deeper soul connection
Helps set our spirits free.
