Central Passage
Genesis 3:14-15
"How It All Got Started", Msg. 22

Remember my sermon about God asking Adam and his woman who told them they were naked? Adam blamed the woman and she blamed the serpent. God was trying to teach each to confess and repent their sins. Because neither showed Godly sorrow. Therefore, God cursed them from that moment on. He also cursed the snake – believed to have walked upright – to crawl on his belly and eat of the dust of the earth (Isaiah 65:25, Micah 7:17).

We don’t know the day nor time when the angels were created. But we know that Satan was a part of the Heavenly Host, once referred to as the Angel of Light. But like so many others, he wanted more. More power. More strength. More authority. With some of his followers, he had the nerve to want to attempt to overpower the omnipotent God and overtake heaven. A defeat which sent them straight to hell. Sometime afterwards – on the sixth day – God created man in His image and the beasts of the earth. He gave man dominion over everything that moved upon the earth. God grew everything possible and planted a garden in Eden, took the man to dress and keep the Garden, and gave the man a wife and a covenant relationship with Him.

Satan sensed his lost victory in the air. He probably said to himself that he, and his fallen angels, will get their revenge yet. He thought he could get Adam and his mate. He thinks he can get you. Satan had you bound with his teeth sunken into you, but despite your actions, or lack thereof, Jesus stopped by, picked you up, dusted you off, and you went right back into the life! But Jesus has not quit on you. He has not given up on you. If you call on the name of the Lord, He may not come when you want Him, but He’ll stop by right on time. Be of good cheer because Jesus has overcome the world. We are overcomers, too. Jesus dropped the charges of our sins and declared our cases to be dismissed. We are saved by His grace.

The agony of defeat was a 3-fold punishment for Satan:

  • He is cursed above all cattle, every beast of the field, birds of the air, and fishes of the sea;
  • He will crawl on his belly and lick dust forever;
  • There will forever be enmity, or ill-will, between Satan and woman and her offspring.

Both Satan and the serpent, being an instrument of the devil, were justly punished. We’ve allowed ourselves to be used and abused by the devil. We must spiritually dress appropriately not to allow ourselves to be an instrument of his.

I encourage you to seek insight from the Holy Spirit that will tell us that our bodies are the temples of God. When we pollute the temple, allowing garbage (gossip, bad foods, and substances, etc.) we allow Satan to get a foothold. When we consult the Holy Spirit and live according to His Word, we can become victorious!
