Central Passage
Genesis 1:1-2
"How It All Got Started, Msg. 1

The traditional view as to the authorship of the Pentateuch is that Moses, the great law giver, prophet, and judge, wrote the first five books of the Bible. If this is correct, they were written during the 40 years of wandering in the wilderness; the third period in the life of Moses.

Genesis records the beginnings. It sets forth several beginnings: the world, life, domestic relations, institutions, moral order, sin and consequences, God’s plan for man’s redemption, nations, and the beginning of the Messianic nation; in particular.

In some respects, Genesis is the most remarkable book of the Bible. It begins with the truth; that God is; that there is one God; and that He is the creator of the universe. Genesis teaches us that God made man and created him in His image. We are to be spiritual. Lastly, Genesis teaches us of the story of the human race and how it passes from a state of innocence into a state of sin.

As a schoolboy, when I got into a spat with another student, the teacher asked, “Who started it?” When I got into a fight at home with my siblings, my mother asked the same question, “Who started it?” The question seemed to have a negative connotation. Let’s put a positive spin on the beginning and answer the relevant question, “Who started it?”

Prior to the creation, there was nothing but God. Before the beginning, there was an infinite existence of matter and materials. There were no angels, principalities or powers. There were no atoms, molecules, time, space, smell. There was no heat, light, color, no peace, no evil. There was nothing except the eternal. The text reveals that God used no pre-existing material to create the world. He created it out of nothing! God is separate from His creation; and He created man after creating everything else. This would assure that man could only fashion things out of what already existed.

God was in three persons (the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) before the beginning; and the personhoods shared a relationship of love and fellowship (John 17:5, 24). This was not by chance. This was the Creator in action! Step-by-step. The answer to the question, “Who started it?” is God. Not Pharoah, Julius Caesar, Buddha, the Dali Lama, Imhotep, Alexander the Great, or Ala. No religion started it. Not Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, or Buddhism.

I just stopped by to remind you that this world you live in, God started it! The beginning of your life, God began it! The redemption you received, God gave it! This nation you live in, God formed it! This universe you see, God made it! This same God put a roof over your head, food on your table, clothes on your back and shoes on your feet. He befriended you when you had no friend! He trusted you without a background check. He picked you up, brushed you off, and encouraged you to run on to see what the end is going to be! You ask me who started it?
