Central Passage
John 5:1-9 NIV
Healings and Afflictions, Msg. 1

In approximately AD 85-90 the apostle John wrote this book along with the three other epistles that bear his name. And he wrote the book of Revelation. He was the disciple whom Jesus loved. He was the younger brother of James and the youngest of all the disciples. He sat next to Jesus at the last supper and was in His inner circle. John died at approximately 100-years-old.

Sometimes Jesus must put things in motion for us to get our lives in order. We sometimes become overdue in completing tasks or projects. We even become overdue in returning things. It can become costly (penalties, liens, late fees, etc.). Today we’ll talk about one who was past due without cost or penalty.

There was a pool in Bethesda, meaning house of mercy, that was considered a gathering place or center for healing. A great number of people: the disabled, blind, lame, paralyzed, etc. used to gather and enter the water when it began to stir or bubble as that was said to have healing powers because it was stirred by angels.

One invalid man came to the pool daily hoping that someone would put him in the healing water.  When Jesus saw him, He asked the man if he wanted to get well…be made whole? The man, not answering the question, immediately shared his concerns of having no one to help him get into the water when it began stirring. Jesus ordered the old man to get up and walk. And at once, the man was healed.

Like Jesus told the lame man, He tells you to pick-up that which burdens you down! He tells you to stand on your feet! He reminds you that there is no healing power in the water because He is Living Water. He is omnipotent. Do not allow opportunity to pass you by. Get up. Pick up your bed (or mat) and walk.
